Exploring Porthmadog

Salop - Moreben Isaf July 2019 (194 of 223)

Porthmadog, known as Port by locals, is a charming harbour town on the Glaslyn Estuary. This small town is bursting with things to do and see for the whole family to enjoy.

Railway

The world’s oldest narrow-gauge railway, the Ffestiniog Railway is a must-see for anyone visiting Porthmadog. Sit back and enjoy views of Snowdonia in the comfort of the steam train’s carriages and choose from a selection of food and drink from the at-seat buffet service and fully licenced bar.

Museum

There’s even more culture to be soaked up in Porthmadog with a visit to the Porthmadog Maritime Museum. Porthmadog has a rich maritime history, and this museum is the perfect way to learn about the town and add a bit of Welsh culture to your holiday.

Portmeirion

Just a short drive away from Harlech and easily assessable by train being a ten-minute walk from Minfford station, you’ll find the village, Portmeirion. This famous tourist village has been the location of several film and television shows. Created by Sir Clough Williams-Ellis, Portmeirion is a truly unique and beautiful sight. His intention was to show how natural beauty could be complemented by building developments rather than spoilt. And he certainly achieved that. Train from Harlech station to Minfford Station then only a short walk to Portmeirion

Drawing upon Italian and Mediterranean inspiration, the fascinating and brightly washed buildings surround a central piazza. Surrounding these terracotta-roofed buildings is a subtropical forest known as the The Gwyllt. Home to secret gardens, rare flowers and some of the largest trees in Britain, these exotic woodlands are worth visiting just as much as the village itself. The truly magnificent oriental garden, complete with a temple and Chinese bridge, is another must-see at Portmeirion.

Touring

Harbour

Porthmadog’s harbour is a lively part of the town and has excellent restaurants and bars to choose from, as well as great shops too. The harbour plays host to international visitors all year round, from working yachtsman to pleasure boaters, everyone enjoys stopping to enjoy Porthmadog.

There is so much to do in Porthmadog, luckily Min-y-don holiday home owners are less than a 20 minute drive away from this lovely harbour town and can enjoy it as often as they like.
