Just a short drive away from Harlech and easily assessable by train being a ten-minute walk from Minfford station, you’ll find the village, Portmeirion. This famous tourist village has been the location of several film and television shows. Created by Sir Clough Williams-Ellis, Portmeirion is a truly unique and beautiful sight. His intention was to show how natural beauty could be complemented by building developments rather than spoilt. And he certainly achieved that. Drawing upon Italian and Mediterranean inspiration, the fascinating and brightly washed buildings surround a central piazza. Surrounding these terracotta-roofed buildings is a subtropical forest known as the The Gwyllt. Home to secret gardens, rare flowers and some of the largest trees in Britain, these exotic woodlands are worth visiting just as much as the village itself. The truly magnificent oriental garden, complete with a temple and Chinese bridge, is another must-see at Portmeirion.
